Cake Love

So, I don’t think I’ve posted enough about them yet, but I love cupcakes! I love how small they are and I love that they come with frosting :-) So, after lunch at Redrock Canyon Grill in Silver Spring, Maryland, I went directly across the small street to check out cakelove.

For those of you that watch the Food Network’s Ace of Cakes, there are a small number of locations in the DC area.  While the Husband and I were dating, I lived in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, DC and fell in love with cakelove’s sister location, Love Cafe, just a few blocks from my apartment.  I hadn’t yet been to the cakelove location in Silver Spring and was excited to check out the selection!

There were cupcakes of course!

And cake slices to choose from!

I was craving something lemony but unfortunately none of the options that day include lemon :-( I debated for a while and decided to go with a chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting.  I wasn’t hungry due to my filling lunch, so I got mine to go.

I saved it until the next day when we were heading to my friend’s wedding.  I had kept it in the fridge overnight so after I let it come to room temperature (important for buttercream frosting!), I dug in.

It was, as expected, so good! The frosting tasted just like strawberries and the cupcake was moist and chocolaty. Yum! I heart cupcakes :-)

Redrock Canyon Grill

This weekend, the Husband and I are actually at home! We’re relaxing after a fun 5K with Kath and Matt and I’m catching up on blogging so you’ll likely see a bunch of posts this weekend! Last weekend was our last personal trip until Thanksgiving week (counting down to Disney World for the Husband’s 30th birthday!).  We headed up to Maryland to attend my childhood friend’s wedding near Annapolis (Congrats Kelli & Simon!).  The wedding was on Sunday so we spent Saturday with my family for lunch before heading to Northern Virginia to spend time with the Husband’s :-)

For lunch, the Husband, my parents, and I decided to head to downtown Silver Spring to the Redrock Canyon Grill (which has actually been renamed the Copper Canyon Grill although everything still bore the original name).

All four of us ordered iced teas.  There was a bit of confusion as shifts changed with the wait staff and some of us received plain iced tea while others received raspberry sweet tea.   The Husband and I stuck with the raspberry tea.  Be sure that you specify if you decide you want tea!

My dad went with the Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans.  He liked them.  A warning though – the mashed potatoes were spicy so if you’re like most of my family, don’t get them if you don’t like spice!

My mom went with the Grilled Chicken and Avocado Club Sandwich.  It had chicken breast, avocado, bacon, tomato, sprouts, Swiss, and honey mustard on grilled wheat.  This was one of the first items that stood out to me on the menu and it looked like my mom enjoyed it.  She chose glazed carrots as her side.  Yum!

IMG_0992

The Husband went with the Wood Grilled Tenderloin Beef Tip Salad.  It contained mixed greens, croutons, red onion, tomato, pear, Gouda & Honey-sesame vinaigrette.  He also ordered a side of Mac Daddy Mac & Cheese which had bacon and red pepper (the spicy kind, not the sweet kind) in it.

IMG_0993

I went in a similar direction with the mac & cheese and the “Not So Simple??? House Salad. My salad came with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, chèvre, carrots, spiced pecans, croutons & Adobe dressing.

IMG_0994

The Husband and I were both happy with our choices but disappointed that we forgot to ask for dressing on the side.  The salads were SOAKED in dressing – it was a bit overwhelming and definitely took away from the “healthiness” of salads.  We’d order them again – just remembering to have it on the side though!

The service was pretty great! We certainly never went thirsty and the staff was quite friendly…

If you don’t like spice, definitely ask your server if items you might order are spicy – they like to add seasonings to their dishes.  There are a lot of options to choose from.  We haven’t been disappointed yet :-)

Korean BBQ at Il Mee Buffet

This past Sunday I headed to Northern Virginia for work while the Husband headed to Pittsburgh (posts about his trip to come this weekend!).  Shortly after I arrived, I met up with a good friend I haven’t seen in a few years and we headed straight to what might become a tradition for us: Korean BBQ! The first time I tried Korean BBQ was with him at Il Mee Buffet for his birthday a few years back and loved it and he basically doesn’t get out to it as much as he’d like.  So we were both happy to be going back :-)  Il Mee Buffet is located in Annandale, VA (for those of you in the area).

There are no menus as the whole restaurant is a buffet.  As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with a giant square buffet.  One side has sushi, one has all sorts of asian foods (korean, japanese, and chinese), one side has fruit and rice, while the last side as raw meat (more details below).

IMG_0757

At each table, there is a korean bbq grill and many tables (perhaps the larger ones) have vents over them.

IMG_0758

Correction! There is one menu :-) The alcohol menu is plastered on the dividers between tables.  Although kinda blurry, the menu has all sorts of foreign beverages – many of which I have not yet tried…

IMG_0759

My friend decided to get a bottle of Soju for us to split.  It’s very similar to vodka, but much milder.  (For example, I think I had 4 shots of this during dinner and there was not even a little buzz :-) )

IMG_0761

IMG_0763 IMG_0765

For our first course, we hit up the sushi side of the buffet.  There were all kinds and I don’t recall them being labeled.  I just chose what looked good and they were all a hit!

IMG_0762

Next up was the meats! Similar to a Mongolian BBQ type restaurant (if you haven’t been to one, you’re missing out!) there were multiple options for meat.  We chose two types of beef and some pork.  (Our other options included chicken, shrimp, and maybe some fish?)

IMG_0766

Our waitress turned on our grill, placed our meats and our garlic on the grill.  While she checked on other tables we moved the meat around a bit on the grill and she came back to cut up the larger pieces (they carry around scissors with them :-) )

IMG_0770

My friend gathered a plate of traditional items to go with the cooked meats.  The top left was a lettuce and spices mixture, top right is red pepper sauce, and the bottom bowl was garlic (and as mentioned before, ended up on the grill. Yum!)

IMG_0768

While those cooked, I had my fill of asian buffet items.  I had a couple of types of noodles, green beans, some more sushi, and some seafood and veggie items.  There is also some dim sum which is supposed to go nicely with the Soju (and it sure did!).  I also had a bowl of white rice to go with the meat.

IMG_0767

Everything was as good as I remembered! I’m glad I was able to catch up with my friend and get back to a place that I hope to visit again with him in the near future.  If you haven’t been to a korean bbq restaurant before, I highly recommend it!

Gordon Biersch

One evening in DC, I met up with a good friend for a beer and dinner at Gordon Biersch at Tysons Corner.  I used to go here all the time in my first job for happy hour with my friends and it was nice to come back after so many years away.  Seasonally I believe they present a special menu – at this time it was Caribbean! (exclamation point included in the special :-) )

IMG_0179

GB makes a number of their own beers.  I decided to try the Sommerbrau (good thing they put it on the glass because there’s no way I would have remembered weeks later!).  I’m generally not picky about beers, but I was not a fan of this one.  I drank most of it, but would not order it again.  It was a shame as I’ve liked their other beers in the past.  :-/

IMG_0182

My friend and I decided that we should order an appetizer off of their seasonal menu so we went with the Coconut Shrimp.  Delish!

IMG_0184

For my entree, I went with Goat Cheese Ravioli with mushrooms and I believe olive oil.

IMG_0185

I love goat cheese, but in ravioli, it seemed a bit dry.  Perhaps from the boiling?  I enjoyed the dish any way but would try something else next time I’m there.  If I remember correctly, they do have tasty burgers and southwestern egg rolls :-)
