Kalypso’s on Lake Anne

On Thursday night, I decided to venture out from DC to meet up with friends who live in the ‘burbs :-) Out in the Reston area, there’s a little known lake called Lake Anne.  On Lake Anne is a large residential community as well as a handful of businesses and restaurants.  A few weeks ago, a Greek restaurant opened up and we decided to check it out.  Kalyspo’s Sports Tavern is located in quite a nice location – Lake Anne.  There are people who have lived in Reston for years who had/have no idea that this place (Lake Anne) exists.

(Did you notice that the “boat” on the left isn’t really a boat? It’s a floating deck!)

Kalypso’s has a huge outdoor patio and we knew we had to sit outside even though it was quite hot and humid.  This photo doesn’t show how large it was, but I believe there must be 20 tables or so out there.

IMG_3480

The menu is quite vast.  Most of the appetizers are Greek/Mediterranean (what I was most looking forward to) and the entrees themselves are Greek, Italian, and American.  Definitely something for everyone.

IMG_3479   IMG_3482

The girls started with white sangria which we all enjoyed :-) Nice and refreshing on this hot day.  The guys had beer – domestics were $3 with the happy hours special.

IMG_3477

We were brought bread and oil but were too busy chatting and catching up to have any.

IMG_3478

Definitely needed to have an appetizer as I rarely get an opportunity to get Mediterranean so I went with hummus and pita to share with the table.  We were impressed with the pita (warm, soft, and pillowy) as well as the quantity of the pita! It’s always annoying when restaurants don’t give you enough dippers for your dips!

IMG_3484

For my entree, I ordered a Gyro which was excellent.  My friends ordered the souvlaki (one had the entree while the other had the sandwich) and both seemed to like it.  One friend also ordered the house salad and LOVED the dressing.

IMG_3485

As we dined, we enjoyed a Blue Grass band that performed next to the lake :-)

The service was very good at Kalypso’s.  It was clear that most of the servers are in high school/college and are new at waiting tables, but they tried so hard and thus gave great service.  There was a bit of nervousness you could see in their hands (some of them dropped some things), but we always had enough water, felt that our server wasn’t too far away, and felt just well taken care of.

My friends and I definitely recommend that you check out Kalypso’s as well as Lake Anne :-)

Girls Night Out at Clydes of Gallery Place

Two nights in a row blogging after going out :-) I’m on a roll and expect to continue to do so for a few days! Woo hoo! Tonight, I made plans with two of my favorite ladies I became good friends with my senior year of college.  We realized that we haven’t hung out (me included that is – they hang out routinely!) in approximately 4 years!! But even with all of those years that have passed, we picked up right where we left off.  I love friendships like that :-) I vowed to keep better in touch and can’t wait to see them again soon!

So, anyway, on to the restaurant… my friend Marjorie is a part of a Big Sister/Big Brother program and was meeting her little sister in the China Town area and since Anne was coming from Capital Hill and I was coming from Dupont, we decided that China Town was the perfect place to meet. I left my hotel about 45 minutes in advance and took a leisurely walk south to the White House and then east over to China Town.

IMG_3463

Our plans were to meet at Clyde’s – Gallery Place for drinks and dessert at around 8pm.  Clyde’s is located right on 7th Street in the heart of China Town.

I’ve been here before and am always impressed with how large the restaurant is.  There’s lots of rooms and two levels including a very large bar area.  Since we planned to do a lot of chatting, we saw a table in the bar area and asked to be seated there.  I took photos but they turned out blurry.  Oh well! It was wood and leather :-)

We each ordered drinks that we were happy with.  I ordered a glass of wine – a Franciscan Chardonnay from Napa Valley (2008).  I could have sworn I took a photo, but there’s none there.  Guess I was too busy catching up!

Ann and Marjorie had already had dinner, but I hadn’t had a chance to and decided to get a bite with our drinks.  I ordered the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque combo.  It was oven dried tomatoes, swiss and cheddar cheese on sourdough bread.  (It usually comes with bacon as well but I asked for mine without.)  When it arrived, it looked a bit small, but it ended up being the perfect size.  After my tomatoes fell out, I pulled the sandwich apart to dip it into the soup.  Yum! The soup was less bisque-y than I expected and at first I thought it was fine.  In the end though, it actually did hit the spot.

As we finished our drinks, we decided that we all wanted something sweet to share.  The entire dessert menu (one of the biggest I’ve seen in a long time) looked appetizing but we settled on a classic – warm brownie sundae.  As you would expect from classic, it was comforting and sweet.  The brownie was one of the best any of us had had in a while.  A great choice!

So glad I got to catch up with my girlfriends from college tonight! Clyde’s was a great venue for out meetup and the service was great.  While we’re not necessarily huge fans of Chinatown, the location worked out well for all of us.  Can’t wait to see these ladies again soon :-)

Ulah Bistro

Hi Readers! I can’t remember the last time I wrote a blog post within 24 hours of going somewhere, let alone the same night! (Though this is posting the next day.)  I’m in the DC area for the week for business and pleasure and had the opportunity to stay in the city which I used to call home (and love and miss dearly!).  Staying in the city made it quite easy to meet up with one of my favorite roommates who still lives in the city.  After work, she met me near my hotel south of Dupont Circle and we headed north to the U Street area to one of her favorite restaurants in the area: Ulah Bistro.

IMG_3436

The restaurant was hopping tonight! When we walked in, there was one table available for two (yay for not having to wait!).  It’s a bit of a crowded restaurant (I felt like I was on top of my neighbor’s table when I tried to get into the booth section).  We were about halfway into the restaurant so this picture shows just the back half of the restaurant.  I liked the vibe of the restaurant – it seemed like a place I would frequent if I lived in the area.

IMG_3447

Tonight, they had a special of a 3-course menu for about $30, a 4 glass wine flight for $16, and $2.50 margaritas (I believe that was the drink).  We turned down the specials and contemplated for a while over the menu.  Our waitress was super patient as we were busy catching up (haven’t seen my friend in a year!) in between trying to figure out what to order.  As we contemplated, she brought us a basket of soft, doughy bread and olive tapenade.  (It looks like pizza but it’s not!)

IMG_3441

Once we finally decided to what to order, we each started with a glass of Sonoma Junction Chardonnay.  I haven’t quite trained my palate to note strong differences in a single type of wine but my friend noted that there was a slight oakiness to this wine.  We both enjoyed it and ordered another while we chatted after our meal :-)

IMG_3443

I share with your their draft beer menu – looks like a good one to me! They also had a good handful of bottles to choose from.

IMG_3437

My friend recommended a handful of items on the menu to include the Carnivale Pizza, the crabcakes, and the burger.  She ended up with the burger tonight and I snagged a fry or two :-)

There was mac n cheese on the menu so you can guess what I had! Smoked Gouda Mac n Cheese which was aged, smoked gouda and pecorino romano cheese, orecchiette pasta, chopped bacon, and homemade cornbread.  It’s actually on the appetizer menu which I think is the perfect size.  I enjoyed the dish and the different kind of pasta.  It wasn’t my favorite, but I do recommend it.  The cornbread was good in my standards, but keep in mind that I don’t generally like cornbread.  This version was very moist and sweet.  Yum!

IMG_3445

Along with the mac n cheese, I ordered the Bistro House Salad – field greens, candied walnuts, cucumbers, tomatoes, and a sherry shallot vinaigrette.  I forgot to order the dressing on the side (something I try to do as many restaurants put way too much dressing on!), but the ratio of dressing to salad was quite reasonable on this dish.  It was a nice balance to the mac n cheese as well.

IMG_3444

Overall, this was a great, casual meal with good service.  Our waitress was attentive and understanding (seeing us as girls busy catching up).  Although we were each only enjoying a glass of wine after dinner, we didn’t feel rushed at all or pressured to order anything else.  This seems like a great neighborhood bistro with a handful of reasonably priced, flavorful menu items.

As a side note to those of you, like me, who haven’t spent much time in DC recently but used to in the past- apparently the U Street corridor has grown a lot in popularity.  Definitely give it a shot the next time you’re in the area and drop any preconceived notions you had!

Center Street Grille

When the Husband and I were in Northern Virginia a few weekends ago, we met up with his parents for lunch on Valentine’s Day in Manassas, VA.  We headed to Center St. Grille as it was close to the Husband’s mom’s new office that we wanted to check out.

IMG_1944

Upon reviewing the menu, I quickly came upon this note that made me happy :-)

IMG_1941 I also enjoyed the fun water glasses!

IMG_1942

They had both brunch and lunch options and while I originally planned on brunch, both the Husband and I ended up ordering lunch items.

First, we each started with chili – mine with just cheese and his with cheese and onions.  This chili was quite good! It was spicy, but not overly so, and the choice of cheese was excellent!

IMG_1947

For my entree, I ordered a roasted veggie wrap.  It included seasonal veggies roasted with a balsamic glaze.  It was supposed to have goat cheese or feta in it as well, but didn’t.  However, it was so very good without the cheese! The fries were one of my favorite kinds as well – a little bit of substance to them on the outside (perhaps beer battered?). Yum!

IMG_1948

The Husband ordered a Buffalo Chicken Wrap with house made chips.  He really liked his dish as well :-)

IMG_1949

I took a picture of my father-in-law’s meal (1) because I loved the colors and (2) it was something I considered ordering.  He had an egg scramble with ham, cheese, and tomatoes.  He thought this was really good too!

IMG_1951

Overall, I think we were all very impressed with our meal! I was expecting just a ho-hum, diner lunch and the quality of the food was much better than that.  If you find yourself in Old Town/Downtown Manassas, we definitely recommend Center St. Grille!
