Republic Kitchen

Ever since it opened, I’ve been eyeing Republic Kitchen & Bar as being on my “to try” list and the Husband and I finally made it there a handful of weeks ago with some friends after work.  (I forgot to get a picture of the sign until after dinner)

Republic Kitchen took over a space which Fado used to fill and that was clear by the décor: very large dark wood bar and other Irish touches.  I liked the open air and vintage feel of the place.

There appeared to be a 2nd floor but I wasn’t sure what was up there…

On to the food! (I know you’ve missed seeing the food on the blog Smile )  As we waited for some of our friends to arrive, the Husband and I ordered an appetizer of Pigs in The Blanket which came with sides of cheddar cheese fondue and whole grain mustard.  These were as good as my memories of them at fancy events as a kid!

IMG_4861

The Husband ordered a beer sampler, but we don’t remember which ones he had (a good reason to blog in a timely manner of course)…

IMG_4862

The Husband had the below sandwich which I believe was pulled pork (although that’s not on the menu online)… no matter what it was, he enjoyed it.

IMG_4863

I ordered the Summer Berry Salad which had mixed greens, blueberries, strawberries, goat cheese and an orange balsamic vinaigrette.  I added grilled chicken to it for protein.  As expected, it was a great combination and fresh.  (This style is always one of my favorites in the summer and this one didn’t disappoint.)

IMG_4864

On the side, and shared with the Husband and friends, I ordered the mac n cheese.  Good stuff!

IMG_4865

My friend Michelle offered me a taste of her Lemon Chicken Breast which came with mashed potatoes and asparagus.  As with the other food, it was good.

Overall, the food was enjoyable and reasonably priced.  Our waitress was sometimes slow but very friendly and personable.  We had a good time with our friends and wouldn’t hesitate to head back to Republic for happy hour if the mood struck.

Timberline Restaurant

After a long and wonderful day at Zion National Park and a scenic drive through Dixie National Forest, we arrived at our lodging in Beaver, Utah – a tiny, tiny town! The Husband booked the hotel using points and when we arrived, we found that the “town” (at least the portion we could see) included farms, two hotels, a gas station, and two restaurants.  (Now that I look at Google Maps, if we had ventured a little bit more north we would have seen the town itself of a little more than 2000 people – it looks cute!).

Once we were checked in, we checked the hotel welcome book and confirmed our dining options were a Mexican restaurant, a Dairy Queen (inside the gas station), and Timberline Restaurant.  The menu looked good so we headed on over.

IMG_4763

We were quickly seated in a booth and brought a carafe of water (which was great because we were thirsty!)

IMG_4764

Our server was friendly and greeted us quickly.  He informed us of the specials before we made it through the menu and then took our order.  With my order, I got the salad bar which was small but filled with the things I needed.  I was especially happy about having fresh cantaloupe.

IMG_4765

The Husband decided to get soup instead of salad and had the shrimp chowder which he found to not be very good.  It was generally bland and flavorless, including the shrimp.  He enjoyed his root beer though Smile

As long time readers know, we love macaroni and cheese and order it any time it’s on the menu at a new-to-us restaurant.  Timberline offered it as a side so we ordered it as a starter.  The menu advised it would be penne pasta in a white cheddar cream sauce with a hint of garlic and toasted pecans.  They were out of pecans, which was fine, but the dish was just adequate.  More creamy than cheesy and a bit bland as well.  I wonder what the pecans would have been like in the dish…IMG_4768

For his main course, the Husband ordered the special of the day – Prime Rib with mashed potatoes and brown gravy and asparagus.  He thought it was good.  We were disappointed though when we left we realized we’d been overcharged.  Unfortunately, since the chalkboard had been taken down for the night, we didn’t bother to do anything about it.

IMG_4769

It also came with a dinner roll.

IMG_4770

For my entrée, I ordered the Chicen Farfalle.  It was grilled chicken, roasted tomatoes, pine nuts, and spinach with farfalle, tossed in a mild garlic cream sauce.  On top, there was grilled focaccia bread (a bit bland so I put it to the side).  The dish itself, though was good.  Very flavorful without any of the items overpowering the others.IMG_4771

The meal met our needs for the evening, but we weren’t blown away by any of it.  If we found ourselves in the area again, we’d probably try the Mexican restaurant first before heading back.  For a hot meal along I-15, though, it hit the spot.

Return Lunch at Rachel’s Kitchen

Every time I’ve walked past Rachel’s Kitchen at The District or looked at the menu, I’ve wanted to eat there but I haven’t  been hungry.  Recently, Groupon offered a deal there that I snatched up knowing I would get there soon.  When the Husband and I returned from our Christmas in DC, we had no food in the house and we were craving some “healthier” food so I suggested we finally head on over.

IMG_4413

Inside, we perused the menu, made our selections, and found a seat while they cooked it all up.

IMG_4406

I enjoyed a giant bottle of water (flying + being back in Vegas = super dehydration).

IMG_4407

And I played with the camera and the fun design of the restaurant.

IMG_4409

For my main course, I ordered the Arugula Pear Salad.  It was baby arugula, pears, shaved fennel, goat cheese and caramelized pecans tossed with a lemon herb vinaigrette.  Delish! And quite large… I had a good portion leftover for lunch later in the week.  This was the healthy dish I’d been craving after a week of Christmas eats and I was glad to have leftovers to enjoy a few days later.

IMG_4410

The Husband ordered the Smoked Turkey and Avocado sandwich which was smoked turkey, avocado, swiss cheese, mixed greens, tomatoes, and chipotle mayo (though knowing the Husband, who hates mayo, that probably wasn’t on there).  He LOVED it.  Seriously.  He wouldn’t stop raving… for days.  Even now as I double checked with him on which sandwich this was (nearly two weeks ago), he’s still raving.  I can’t remember the last time he enjoyed a sandwich so much.  He was able to save the second half for later in the week and loved it as much as leftovers as well.

IMG_4411

In addition, since we always have to try it, we ordered the Rachel’s Mac & Cheese which the menu says has their “own twist.”  The twist = large slices of sauteed onion.  The Husband wasn’t much of a fan, but I enjoyed it.  It was creamy, cheesy, and al dente.  I probably could have gone for less onion, but I still enjoyed it.

IMG_4412

The service at Rachel’s was excellent.  Our dishes were brought to our tables and the staff routinely checked in on us to see how we were doing, to clear our plates, and to bring us take home containers.  The overall menu looks amazing and we can’t wait to go back over and over again to try the other sandwiches, salads, and pastas.  Especially once the weather warms up a bit, I’m sure we’ll be spending many afternoons on walks to The District with lunch or early dinners here.  Can’t wait to be back! Glad it lived up to (and truly exceeded) my expectations :-)

Lost Dog Cafe

The Husband and I traveled back to the DC area a handful of times this fall for a handful of weddings as well as some other fun personal reasons.  On one of these trips, we found ourselves in South Arlington during lunch time and decided to head to the Lost Dog Cafe on Columbia Pike.  The Husband had been many times but this was my first visit.

Per their website and the Husband’s knowledge of their background, the Lost Dog Cafe has a strong interest in rescuing dogs and finding them safe and loving new homes.  In 2001, they formed a foundation for stray dogs and cats and provide them safe shelter until they find them new homes.  There are two Lost Dog Cafe locations and one Stray Cat Cafe.  They are decorated with fun artwork of dogs (and I assume cats at the Stray Cat Cafe location).  I captured a small part of that art with my coaster :-)

 IMG_0293

In terms of food and drink at these cafes, they have a great beer selection :-)

IMG_0294

They have a great selection of meals but the Husband and I were both feeling salads for lunch that day.  One of us had the Fiesta Dog Salad which included fresh romaine, chicken, cheddar, red onions, cucumbers, mushrooms, red peppers, and pico de gallo with peppery parmesan dressing.  The other one of us (I really need to work on blogging sooner after dining out!) had the Fat Willis Chopped Salad which was Grilled chicken breast, crisp smoked bacon, fresh avocado, crumbled feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions on top of romaine lettuce (also served with a peppery parmesan dressing).  We both enjoyed our lunches :-)

Overall, we enjoyed our meal just as the Husband had every other time he’d been to the locations.  The wait staff is friendly and laid back, the beer selection is great, and the food is good.  Looking forward to going back!
