McFadden’s Irish Pub

While the wife and I were in Vegas, the first night we were there, we were exhausted.  The jetlag was taking its toll on us, and both of us were struggling with mild colds (the Wife more than I, sadly).  While we were staying at the Rio, we just decided to go down from our room and find something close by, so we could get back and get to bed.

Downstairs, we found McFadden’s Irish Pub.  Now, the restaurant didn’t look like what you’ll find in the video on their web page.  It looked like a low-key, remarkably well-lit, restaurant and bar just off the casino floor at the hotel.  An old Irish salutation met us as we walked in; litterally meaning “a hundred thousand welcomes.

The bar looked like it had a great beer selection, but with us both feeling sick, we decided to opt not to have any alcohol.  I’m not sure if our immune systems thanked us for it or not, but I’m sure it didn’t hurt.

We missed a picture of the menu, sorry.  The food was reasonably priced, however, considering Vegas is notorious for over-priced food (or at least has been since 2006).  It had standard bar fare, though, with some Irish flare, and a special addition that, despite the fact that neither of us were particularly starving, we couldn’t help but try; fried mac n’ cheese.

Well, as I mentioned, we weren’t too hungry, and we knew we would be going to bed shortly, so we tried for a lighter fare.  I had the apple salad.  It was very good, but a little heavy on the raspberry vinaigrette dressing at times.

The Wife went for a bowl of “Irish Onion” soup and a side of fries.  The fries were bigger than both of us were expecting.

I think we were both satisfied with our meals, but we would generally not recommend McFadden’s as a dining option.  Vegas has so many great places to dine, the fare wasn’t great, and the environment was dead.  Perhaps if things were a little more like the video on the web site, and you were looking for a more exciting atmosphere, then maybe.  With VooDoo on the top floor of the hotel, however, I would think if you were looking for atmosphere, you’d just take the elevator to the 50th floor.

Rio All-suite Hotel & Casino

I’ve been to Las Vegas several times.  If my count is correct, I have been there no less than ten times prior to this most recent trip, and most of those trips were before I met the Wife.  .  I have always tried to stay at a different hotel whenever I’ve gone, although I am quite fond of the Monte Carlo, and have stayed there a couple times.

Since on this trip, we were traveling for professional reasons, and would have a rental car at our disposal, the need to use the hotel as a staging point for the playground that is the Strip, wasn’t as pressing.  When the wife asked me where we should stay, I through out a couple ideas.  First off, when it comes to visiting Vegas, I live by CheapoVegas.com.  I took a look, and thought that maybe TI or Paris would be suitable, as neither of us have either stayed at either hotel.  After doing some rate searching, though, the $38/night rate at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

The first thing I noticed when we got to Vegas was that it was dead.  Even when I was in Vegas three months after 9/11, and general travel was dead, I hadn’t seen Vegas this empty.  We were able to park in the first row of the parking lot, on the most convenience deck.  On two occasions, we walked through a good part of the casino, and there was NO ONE on any slot machines.  It was amazing, and certainly helped explain the $38/night rate.

Considering how empty the hotel was, I was a little surprised we were put in the room we were put in.  We clearly had a discount rate, I know, but the hotel room was on a lower floor (24th), directly adjacent to the elevators.  I didn’t expect the Presidential Suite, but they really could have “wowed” me with a nice room on an upper floor with a great view of the Strip, particularly when I’m SURE plenty of nicer rooms available.  That being said, we did receive a nice room, commensurate with the rate which we were paying.  Take a look.

IMG_1160

I generally think of a suite as having at least two rooms.  This was, indeed, a large room, but it wasn’t two rooms.  I’m not calling ‘Shenanigans,’ and perhaps I had set my expectations a little high, but I was looking forward to a two-room suite in Vegas, like some kind of high roller.

IMG_1161

It had a sizable vanity area with a nice large mirror and plenty of lights.  You can also see the mini-fridge (not to be confused with the mini-bar, which was in the cabinet below the TV).

IMG_1162

For as large as the room, it was surprising how small the bathroom was, particularly the vanity area.  The bathroom was so small, and the bathroom door was so big, we had a hard time getting in and out of the bathroom without having to sit on the toilet.  It was nothing short of awkward.

IMG_1163

Nice shower-tub, but perhaps a little dated.

IMG_1165

The showerhead was a bit spartan, but completely functional.  The number one priority for ME in the shower, is plenty of hot water, which the Rio graciously provided.

IMG_1164

I don’t think I would stay at the Rio again, simply because it didn’t “wow” me, and it doesn’t have a great location.  Also, as I mentioned above, I like to try to stay at different hotels in Vegas, whenever I go.  While it is home to one of Vegas’ best buffets, and Penn & Teller, a personal favorite for shows, is there, I would rather travel TO the Rio from the Strip, then travel TO the Strip from the Rio.

Burger Bar Las Vegas

Jaclyn recommended we head to Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay on our initial Vegas post.  Well, after searching for awhile for it, we made it to Burger Bar.  We will be returning, and would recommend it to anyone heading to Vegas.  We were looking for it off the casino near Rum Jungle and Red Square, but it was actually in the Mandalay Bay mall, called Mandalay Place, between Luxor and Mandalay Bay.  After we got that little bit squared up, we were on our way to a great meal.

IMG_1860 Yes, the picture’s a little blurry, but we are generally sensitive to the tremendous security presence in places like malls and casinos (and airports, and office buildings, and, and, and…).  The picture looked generally clear on the little LCD, so we didn’t take too many pictures.  Once we got inside, the lighting was off, so you’ll notice a lot of our pictures are only so-so today.  Rest assured, we were doing our best.  =)

It didn’t take long to be seated.  It really had a “high-class” sports bar feel to it.  Maybe it’s just the martini glass that makes it all feel a little more elegant, I’m not sure.

IMG_1858 Our booth had its own TV, which was pretty small, considering it was a 6-person booth.  I suppose if you were just trying to keep up with a game or some piece of news, it might be ok.  I wouldn’t want to try to follow a football game on it, though.

IMG_1855

The menu was impressive.  From burgers to beers to desserts.  It had a great selection of everything.

IMG_1853 IMG_1847

Once again, we weren’t super hungry, probably because we were still feeling a little under the weather, and neither an alcoholic beverage NOR a milkshake seemed like a prudent idea, but check out the options for milkshakes!  How could you go wrong!?!  They looked delicious.IMG_1848 Interestingly, I have had a beer float before.  Corona and moose tracks; it was awful.  I somehow think that it was the choice of ingredients more than the concept of a beer float that was terrible.  Guinness and coffee ice cream?  I could give a beer float another try.IMG_1849

IMG_1850 I expected something more like The Counter, which we have in Charlotte.  Really, though, Burger Bar was a far more upscale restaurant/sports bar.  Check out, not only the prices (which can be misleading in Vegas), but also the KINDS of ingredients available for both toppings AND for burgers.

IMG_1851 IMG_1852

Since we were going “light” for the evening, it was just burger and fries for us.  The Wife had the Country Natural burger with cheese, on a honey wheat bun, with skinny fries.

IMG_1857

I had the buffalo burger, with peppercorn bacon, monterey jack cheese, and a fried egg, over easy, on a sesame bun, with some buttermilk zucchini fries.

IMG_1856 The fries were really good, although a little more soggy than I expected.  Not flat out mushy, just a little softer than I thought they would be.  I was impressed.  The burger was top notch.  I ordered medium-rare, and it the meat was cooked appropriately, but the meat wasn’t cooked quite long enough to make it all cohesive.  I’m guessing that the lean buffalo just doesn’t stick together quite as easily as most beef does.

There were six of us at dinner, and everyone was very impressed with their burgers (and respective beers). It certainly made an impression on us, and we’ll be making it a point to hit up the Burger Bar again sometime when we’re back in Vegas.  If you have a chance, put it on your list.

Vegas Baby!!!

Well, the Wife and I finally managed to get our travel schedules in sync enough to travel together.  Tomorrow (Monday) we’re going to be headed to Las Vegas together for a variety of professional reasons, and we’re looking to live it up (a little)!

If there’ s anyplace you would like us to take a look at, just let us know, and we’ll give you our thoughts!

For those of you that don’t know, I have been to Vegas several times.  In fact, it’s probably my most-visited city.  I love Vegas.   I’m not a huge gambler.  I just love the feel of being in Vegas.  As my friend says, “it’s like adding a soundtrack to your life.”  It’ll surely be one of the next cities we provide recommendations on.
