Lake Las Vegas Wine Walk & Bernard’s Bistro

Labor Day weekend, the Husband and I made plans with friends to head out to Lake Las Vegas where a wine tasting event was scheduled to occur: Wine Walk  We originally learned about it thanks to Groupon and recruited friends that might be interested in enjoying a night of wine on the lake.  The event details advised that there would be wines as well as foods from local restaurants for us to sample throughout the night.  It was set to start at 7pm and we arrived about 30 minutes early to find parking and check-in and hopefully not fall too far behind in the crowd (like our experience at the Las Vegas Beer Festival).  We actually arrived a bit too early so we first enjoyed walking around Lake Las Vegas and took in the views.

When registration opened, we got in line, bought our tickets, and received our wristbands, glasses, and wine cards.

One of the things I enjoyed at this event over the Las Vegas Beer Festival was that it was spacious – not confined in a courtyard.  As you walked to each tasting table, you were able to walk in and out of shops (some shops had the tasting table inside), restaurants, and a concert that was going on at the same time on the grass.

The four of us decided to start with whites and search out the tables with them.  Each table gave only one 1-oz pour and punched a hole in the card so we were able to keep track of where we went and where to go next.  A downside, however, was that the tables were not all easy to find (there was no map), but we got to a reasonable amount of the tables throughout the evening.  The more wine I had, the less pictures were taken Party smile

Apparently Prosecco was the tipping point for photos (and reds never had a chance).  All of the individuals working the tables were volunteers unassociated with the winery so whether we learned anything at a table was dependent on how into the event the pourer was, but they were fun to interact with.

After finishing the whites, and realizing that only one table existed with food (a misleading bit of info was included in the website), we decided we needed dinner.  There were a number of restaurants to choose from and for one reason or another, we decided to go with Bernard’s Bistro.

IMG_5192

The restaurant was quite crowded but the wait was only about 20 minutes. The restaurant was cute with a handful of French touches throughout.

IMG_5183  IMG_5185

Since we were full of white wine, we focused on water with dinner.  And then we started our wait for food…  Which seemed to go on for quite some time.  I’m not sure if it was in our wine-filled heads, if was due to the unusual crowd from the wine walk, or just normal slow service, but it felt like forever till our food came.

IMG_5187

First out, some of us ordered a first course.  For mine, I had the French Onion Soup which was quite good.  The broth was beefy and salty, but not overly so.  Each spoonful I was able to get a good ratio of broth, bread, and cheese.  It was one of the better French onion soups I’ve had in some time.

IMG_5188

For his first course, the Husband ordered the Caesar Salad which I ordered for my entrée so I’ll tell you more about later.  For his entrée, he had the Marinated Shrimp and Avocado Sandwich.  What came out was a cold shrimp salad mixed with “flavored sauce” on top of four slices of baguette, topped with avocado and olives.  The Husband wasn’t expecting a cold salad nor mostly “flavored sauce” which he couldn’t quite place (that’s what it’s called on the menu).  Overall, it did not settle well with him and he would not order it again.

IMG_5189

As I mentioned above, I ordered the Caesar Salad as my second course (which the Husband also ordered for his first course).  At first it looked pretty good – a mix of romaine, Caesar dressing, shaved parmesan, and some avocado (and I Red heartavocado!).  As I got into the salad, though, it was more dressing than anything else.  (The Husband had a similar experience but not to the same extent.)

IMG_5190

Throughout a lot of the salad, I spent time shaking and scraping dressing off of the lettuce Sad smile A little more than halfway through, I couldn’t stomach it anymore and gave up.

IMG_5191

So much dressing!

Once we made it through our entrees, we got the bill as quickly as possible so we could head back outside for the red wine.  Unfortunately, a number of the tables were out of red wine by the time we got to them so the group missed out on some of the preferred tastings of the night.  The event was generally fun, and proceeds go to the New Vista Community, a charity helping provide independence to the disabled community.  They have a handful of events at Lake Las Vegas and Town Square including both wine and beer events.  If you’re interested in a night out with wine or beer and raising money for a good cause, check them out – just be sure to have food before you go!

Pin Kaow Thai

A few weeks ago, the Husband and I were invited out with some friends to a local Thai restaurant not too far from our house located on Eastern just south of 215 – Pin Kaow Thai.  Our friends have been fans of this restaurant for some time and often get Thai delivery.  Based on their rave recommendations, we were really looking forward to it since we haven’t yet found a Thai restaurant that we love (although we note that we haven’t tried too many places yet).  I didn’t get any pictures, unfortunately, but the inside of the restaurant is quite beautiful.  It’s ordained in carved dark wood and the staff is dressed in beautiful, colorful traditional outfits.  There doesn’t appear to a wait often, especially since the restaurant is quite large, so we were seated immediately upon arrival.

To start, the Husband ordered one of his favorite Thai soups – Tom Yum Gai.  It is a lemongrass based soup with mushrooms and shrimp and other Thai related veggies.  You can order your spiciness level on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being total spice wimp and 10 being something I can’t fathom.  Six is right about the right level for the Husband while 4 is mine.  The Husband wasn’t very impressed with this soup, unfortunately.  He felt it was too expensive and it was generally unremarkable in flavor.  Additionally, there were giant pieces of ginger which were hard to differentiate until it hit your tongue and ruined your palate.

IMG_5160

For his entrée, though, he ordered the green curry pork.  He thought it was great! It included a great amount of pork and veggies, the curry sauce itself was one of the best he’s ever had, and the spiciness level was spot-on for him.  In the brown pot was rice for two to three persons.  (We learned on a separate visit that ordering extra rice costs money so be sure to plan ahead when doling it out).

IMG_5161

I ordered the pad thai which I unfortunately found to be unremarkable and rather bland.  The Husband enjoyed it though.

IMG_5162

On my next visit I ordered the Pad See Ew which was better but still not great.  Our friends are big fans of the yellow curry and having tried both of theirs, I have to agree.  Green, yellow, or red curry will be at the top of my list on future visits as the curry really is that good.  Additionally the service is good (there’s always someone filling your water or available for any separate requests) and overall the price is reasonable.  I wouldn’t call Pin Kaow my favorite Thai food but they’re at the top of my list for now here in Las Vegas/Henderson.

The Pub at Monte Carlo

When I asked my brother what show(s) were at the top of his list for the visit, he quickly stated “The Jabawockeez.” Not knowing much about them other than the fact that they were dancers with masks at the Monte Carlo, I wasn’t very interested in seeing them.  However, since I like my brother and I wanted him to have a good visit, I reluctantly agreed to see them.  (For those of you uneducated like me, they were the winners on a show called America’s Best Dance Crew)  Getting tickets was a bit of an ordeal (I wanted to try to save money, but they didn’t have a locals discount and each time I tried to get tickets at the half price ticket booths, they were sold out).  Luckily, the box office still had some tickets in the upper level and we were able to snag four tickets the day of the show.

Image from tvloop.com

Not even 5 minutes into the actual show, I changed my mind.  They are pretty awesome! The dancers are talented and fun to watch.  The show has a whole spectrum of music and dance styles and a loose storyline to follow.  The only complaint I have is that the theatre wasn’t designed for them so parts of the show are impossible to see from the upper level (any time they go into the crowd).  However, we didn’t miss much and we would all highly recommend them if you have time to see them while in Vegas.

After the show, we were hungry and debated about a handful of places to go.  Since we were parked at the Monte Carlo and didn’t want to go far, we decided to try out The Pub and are very happy we did.

The mac & cheese under the appetizer menu looked amazing and it was! It was smoked gouda, parmesan, and fontina cheeses plus pancetta, English peas, and toasted breadcrumbs. SO VERY GOOD!  It was also more than enough for my dinner and for samples for the rest of the table.

IMG_5131

A big grin for how much I loved this mac & cheese

The Husband and my brother each ordered burgers – the Hangover Cure which is a cheeseburger with secret sauce and a fried egg.  The Husband got his with fries and my brother with onion rings.  At the recommendation of the waiter, the Husband’s fries were Mesquite and they were AMAZING.  Not something we would have thought to order, but we highly recommend them.  (My brother and sister-in-law actually stopped back there the next day before heading to California, just to have the fries)

My sister-in-law ordered the one of the flatbreads and I enjoyed it as leftovers the next day Smile.

Overall, the food was great and the service was fabulous.  On our way out, we even chatted with the manager and complimented him on how great the experience was.

For all of you locals out there, they have a great locals program that your server can help you sign up for.  As a local, with the Locals card, which is free, you get the happy hour specials all day every day, plus Sundays have something like half priced burgers for the members (don’t quote me on that, but it’s something special).  We’ve got our card now and hope to be back this football season!

Top of the World

Earlier this year, the Husband and I received a handful of Restaurant.com gift certificates from our airline miles rewards program and we spent some of those dollars on a certificate for lunch at the Top of the World restaurant atop the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino.  We weren’t sure when we were going to use it when we bought it, but when we found out my brother and sister-in-law were coming to visit, we thought it would be a perfect spot to go! On Monday of their visit, while the Husband and I went off to work, they went exploring and we agreed to met up for lunch after I made a reservation for around 12pm.

Getting to the Top of the World takes some time.  Once in the casino, you have to follow signs for the restaurant and you arrive at a hostess counter on the 2nd level.  After they confirm you for lunch/dinner, you go through security and then are escorted by the security guard to the elevator.  When the elevator arrives, an elevator conductor is inside and escorts you to the top floor.  The elevators also take riders to the two levels above the restaurant which include an observation deck and a handful of amusement park rides.  We decided to check those out later, though, and enjoy lunch first.

IMG_5081

IMG_5082

As we looked through the menu, the Husband and I decided to each order a glass of wine to enjoy with lunch.  I had a glass of the Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay from Sonoma while the Husband had a glass of the Talbott Pinot Noir from Monterey, CA. When his glass arrived, it had cork in it and the staff was VERY apologetic and brought him a new glass.

IMG_5039

Check out the view from our seats! All of the tables have the same fabulous view as they’re all on the rotating ring of the restaurant, immediately next to the windows.  The rotation is slow, but you make at least one full rotation during a normal paced meal.

Here’s my brother and sister-in-law with the smoothies they ordered Smile

IMG_5044

And of course the Husband and myself…

If you look out one of the top windows, you can see one of the rides above the restaurant – Insanity.  Their website describes it as a massive mechanical arm extending out 64 feet over the edge of the hotel, at over 900 feet above the Strip.  Oh my!

IMG_5045

To start, at my brother’s request we had the Flash Fried Calamari served with tomato sauce and wasabi sour cream.  Both sauces were perfect with this dish.

IMG_5046

We had a basket of rolls which were okay… definitely not the best rolls in the world, but we had lots of other food to fill us up.

IMG_5048

The butter with the rolls appeared to be different flavors.

IMG_5047

Periodically, we passed a display table of dessert options which made our mouths water.

IMG_5049

IMG_5050

The Husband, my sister-in-law, and I all went with the Three Course Chef’s Choice Lunch.  To start, the Husband had the Lobster Bisque which was flavorful and creamy.

IMG_5052

Julie and I each had the Market Greens Salad which I really enjoyed.

IMG_5053

More great views…

IMG_5054

IMG_5055

And then we saw this warning sign…

IMG_5056

This was one of my attempts at catching a sky jumper on film… do you see the cord at the bottom? They jumped too quickly for me!

IMG_5058

The Husband and I each ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi Bolognese which was very airy.  I thought the bolognese was excellent – clearly a traditional recipe with various meats and carrots, simmered for a long time.

IMG_5059

Julie had the Petit File with Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and Beurre Blanc which came with roasted potatoes.  Also a very good dish.

IMG_5060

And last, but not least, my brother ordered off of the regular menu with the Turkey Club, which he also enjoyed.

IMG_5061

For our third course, we each received the following dessert tasting plate.  (My brother was given one too as a treat due to the cork in the Husband’s wine – very thoughtful!)  I don’t recall what the first sample was but the middle one was a gooey chocolate and the last one was a raspberry mousse.

IMG_5062

Overall, we were blown away by the food, the view, and the service.  This was definitely a splurge lunch, but was a great experience to celebrate my brother and sister-in-law visiting.

After lunch, we headed to the top deck to get an outside view and to see the amusement park rides on top of the hotel.  While the view inside the restaurant was very cool, this was even more gorgeous.

IMG_5063

IMG_5064

IMG_5065

It was quite a bit windy though! It was a struggle to keep my skirt in line Open-mouthed smile

IMG_5068

Above us in the center of the hotel was the Big Shot which is one of those seated rides that shoots you straight up into the air and drops you via a free fall.

IMG_5078

Off the side of the hotel is the X-Scream which they describe as a massive teeter-totter which takes you 27 feet over the edge of the hotel!

IMG_5075

IMG_5076

IMG_5077

One of the other rides is the SkyJump which we saw while dining in the restaurant Smile

Overall, as I said before, we had a great experience.  If you are looking for a nice lunch overlooking the Strip, I highly recommend Top of the World at the Stratosphere.
