Nielsen’s Frozen Custard

I’m not sure how, but after dinner at Veloce, we found room to go with about half of our group out to Nielsen’s Frozen Custard, a favorite dessert spot for two of our friends and their kids.

As we waited in line and made decisions about what to order, I fell in love with the décor.  The place had so much charm!

A simple sign gave us direction on what to do…

Or you could look at the menu to determine your style and toppings Smile

A team of hardworking summer employees took our orders and got our custard out as quickly as possible.

IMG_4899

Not being particularly hungry, I went with a basic cup of chocolate frozen custard with reese’s pieces.  It was thick and creamy and delicious.

IMG_4900

Our friends recommended the Concretes which are very thick shakes (like a Blizzard at Dairy Queen) and the Husband went for one himself.  As you can tell by his goofy smile, he loved it!

Nielsens’s was delish and a fun dessert treat.  The atmosphere is fun for the whole family and the staff is friendly and quick.  A definite must, especially on a warm summer night!

Vegas’s Sugar Factory

After enjoying our wonderful meal at Mon Ami Gabi and a walk up and down the Strip, the Husband and I and our friend Melanie (who was in town for work but celebrating her birthday with us) stopped at a new dessert place on the Strip – the Sugar Factory.  Traditionally, the Sugar Factory is a candy store so the fact that they were adding a full restaurant on to the store at the Paris was something we were interested in checking out.  Plus, we needed to ensure Melanie had dessert on her birthday!

IMG_4671
The restaurant was relatively big and had its own style of casual yet fun/classy.

IMG_4673

IMG_4675

The menu was vast with dessert options, but included regular menu items as well.  But since we were there for dessert, dessert was what we had.  The Husband and Melanie were interested in sundaes and both went with the Cookie Jar Sundae.

They both enjoyed their sundaes Smile

I wasn’t hungry, but wanted to try something sweet.  With Serendipity 3 across the street at Caesar’s, at which my favorite (and really only draw to the restaurant) is the Frozen Hot Chocolate, I was interested to try one of the many frozen hot chocolates that the Sugar Factory had concocted.  In order to make a straight forward comparison, I decided to go with the Classic Frozen Hot Chocolate.

IMG_4683

Unfortunately, it was gross.  While I may be biased toward the Serendipity version, there was really nothing about this drink that was enjoyable (except perhaps that it was cold?).  I remember it being gritty, and bitter.  I had a few sips and decided it wasn’t worth the calories.

In addition to dessert, Melanie ordered tea and was brought a good selection to choose from and a large neon green pot and mug.

The host staff and our waitress were all very friendly and responsive.  We learned that the Sugar Factory is open 24 hours a day (for that 3 or 4am sugar fix you need perhaps after losing all your money at the craps table?).  While the Husband enjoyed his sundae, I don’t expect we’ll be back.  Between the good options at Max Brenner as well as the wide availability of desserts across the many, many restaurants on the Strip, there’s really nothing special about the Sugar Factory.

Post BBQ Tutti Frutti

Although we were pretty stuffed from our delicious Honey Pig korean bbq, there’s always room for fro-yo, especially when it’s a new-to-me location.  My brother and sister-in-law decided to stop at Tutti Frutti on our way back down to Silver Spring.  It was a chilly and rainy night so we hopped on inside as quickly as we could from the parking lot (to find a very full Tutti Frutti).

IMG_0439

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the green tile which I’ve pointed out in other posts about serve-yourself fro-yo places.  What is up with that?!?! It makes me laugh every time Smile

IMG_0440

Just like the others, there were a handful of yogurt options and I believe I was particularly fond of the tart yogurt.  There was a good selection of fruit toppings (more than any other place that I can remember)…

IMG_0441

…and candy and cereal toppings.

Colorful spoons to go with your bowl!

IMG_0444

And apparently no picture of my actual yogurt – oops! It was good though and stayed frozen through most of the bowl (a key requirement in my judgment of a fro-yo place).  The staff was friendly and the store was clean.  While quite crowded, we were able to grab a table a few minutes after paying and were able to enjoy our dessert comfortably seated.  While I don’t think I’d go out of my way for this place (with how many fro-yo places exist these days), it hit the spot for the location we were in.

An Excuse for Pie

As a kid, my family would visit a diner called Baker’s Square every once in a while for dinner or breakfast, but more importantly – pie! I have fond memories of French Silk pie and the rare times I see it on the menu, I get excited.  I don’t have pie often but when I do, I love it.

Shortly after we moved to Las Vegas, we drove past my first Marie Callender’s Restaurant & Bakery and I was surprised! I had no idea it was a restaurant – I’d only ever seen the frozen foods.  When I realized their specialty is pie, they got added to my “must eat” list.  On Saturday night, I wasn’t in the mood to cook and decided I wanted pie.  The Husband appeased me and we headed to our closest Marie Callender’s.

After perusing the menu for a while, although there were some good choices (lots of diner food options), nothing was really standing out to me.  Since I was there for the pie, but wanted dinner first, I chose to go with the unlimited soup and salad bar.  It wasn’t huge but had everything that I needed for dinner.

IMG_4597

While I was off getting soup and salad, our waitress brought us cornbread.  I tend to not be a fan of cornbread the but the Husband loves it.  After he raved about it, I decided to have a bite myself and was very impressed with how moist it was.

IMG_4598

The soup and salad bar had two soup options – a vegetable minestrone and a potato cheese soup.  Minestrone often tastes too salty for me so I went with the potato cheese soup and the cup hit the spot.

IMG_4599

My salad had a great base of mixed greens.  On top, I had beets, mushrooms, peas, corn, grilled chicken, pasta salad, and some cantaloupe.  I went back up for a tiny bit more of pasta salad.  Yum!

IMG_4600

The Husband ordered the Los Cabo burger as part of the burger and pie deal Smile It had a “spicy” sauce which supposedly had jalapenos in it, jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and avocado, plus a side of fries.  He thought the fries were perfect – not too crispy not too soft.  They tasted somewhat battered to me, and I agreed that they were good.

IMG_4601

On to the best part – pie! I knew exactly what kind of pie I was going to have – Chocolate Satin which I assumed was MC’s version of French Silk.  I was Smile It was excellent! The dish makes it look like it was a small piece, but it was a perfect size.

IMG_4602

The Husband and I were interested in seeing what the difference was between the Chocolate Cream and the Chocolate Silk pie so he ordered it so we could share and compare.  The chocolate cream pie tasted like chocolate pudding (a good thing in our books) and was just as good as the Chocolate Silk. And it had sprinkles!

IMG_4603

I seriously can’t wait to have more pie at Marie Callender’s Smile The rest of the meal was enjoyable as well.  It was cheap and our waitress was a sweetheart.  She was super overworked, though, so service was a bit slow.  However, since we weren’t in a hurry, it didn’t bother us at all.  The place appeared to be very kid-friendly (there were LOTS of families with kids there) and all of the staff appeared to be quite patient with them all.  I’m not sure if we’ll be back to eat dinner, but the breakfast menu looked good and I know I will be getting some pie to go.

Do you like pie? If so, what’s your favorite flavor?
