Bryce Canyon

After our great hiking experience at Zion National Park and a good night’s sleep, the Husband and I checked out of our Beaver, Utah hotel and headed to Bryce Canyon.  We’d heard Zion National Park was awesome and that Bryce Canyon was even better so we were excited.  Also, since it’s a higher elevation, we were looking forward to some cooler temps!  We checked out the website beforehand and decided to park outside of the park to take the free shuttle bus in.

Due to our new National Park pass for the year, we popped to the ticket counter just to pick up a trail guide before boarding the shuttle.

IMG_2225

This time around, we decided to bypass the visitor center and head straight to the trails.  The park has a designated shuttle/trail area and then an area to drive around yourself.  We headed to the farthest shuttle stop, Bryce Point, to take some photos and determine what trails to take.

We were wowed at how different Bryce looked compared to Zion! From there, we began our hike along the Rim Trail, an easy walk along the top of the canyon.

We came across this sign that cracked me up SmileIf you look closely, there is a message to both dog owners and dogs themselves.

IMG_2347

One thing that’s different at Bryce is that you can take a horseback ride down into the canyon.  It wasn’t something we were interested in that day, but it was fun to see the horses go by.

IMG_2349

After some time along the canyon’s rim, we headed to the lodge (which had a restaurant) and then to the General Store, to grab some lunch.  The next time we go to national parks, I plan on preparing lunches for us to bring along.  There was a good selection though of snacks, sandwiches, and other munchies, though, that met our needs.

Our first up close wildlife of the day – birds on the porch with us looking for some food.

IMG_2354

After lunch, we headed out on a more strenuous hike to see the Chinese Wall and Tower Bridge.  The hike down was easy (it was down of course) and back up was more strenuous, but we really enjoyed the sites along the way.

We also checked out Sunrise and Sunset points before beginning the Navajo Trail.

IMG_2526

We only hiked a little bit down as we were tired, hungry, and thirsty.  We will definitely be back as this trail looked awesome!  After the hiking, we took the shuttle back out of the park to grab our car to start the driving portion of the park.  We hit each of the lookout points before heading back towards Zion for dinner and St George for the night.

Driving through Bryce and Zion was breathtaking.  Even if you don’t have time to stop and hike, we highly recommend a quick drive through each – you won’t regret it!

I truly can’t wait to go back!!! Nor can I wait for all of the other national parks we’re checking out in the next 10 months before our pass runs out Smile

Dixie National Forest

After spending the day hiking at Zion National Park, the Husband and I drove east through the park to head north to our lodging for the night.  Looking for a particularly scenic drive, we ended up cutting through Dixie National Forest.  Before we left for this mini vacation, we were warned we might see snow but after a high 80s/low 90s day at the park, we weren’t expecting to actually see any.  Boy, were we wrong! Dixie had lots and lots of snow and one of the roads we wanted to travel on was closed.  This experience added to my love of the southwest and Mother Nature Smile Enjoy the photos!

Zion National Park

May was the month of the national park for the Husband and I (or the kick-off to the Year of the National Park!). (How is it July already?!?!?)  Early in the month, we visited the Grand Canyon (south rim) and Memorial Day weekend we headed to Southwest Utah to hike Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon.  Ever since we moved to Las Vegas, we have heard how beautiful each location is and we couldn’t wait to head out that way.  We didn’t camp during this trip (instead we used up hotel points!) and ended up staying in St George Thursday and Saturday nights and farther north on Friday night.

By the time we made it to the park, parked at and visited the Visitors Center, and headed to the start of the trails we were interested in hiking, we were hungry so we grabbed a bite to eat at The Lodge.  We hopped on the park tram system and jumped off at the Zion Lodge Stop.

There was a good outdoor patio area as well as a beer garden which would be fun to hang out at if we were staying at the park. After lunch, we headed out on the Emerald Pool trails (there are three: upper, middle, and lower; one of which was closed) as well as the Grotto trail.  It was a gorgeous day and I loved that the beginning of the hike was up and the end brought us back down.  We saw beautiful waterfalls and gorgeous scenery all around.  We loved Zion National Park and can’t wait to get back!

The Husband took A LOT of photos with the DSLR and I’ve tried to pare them down to the best…. Enjoy!

We took this tunnel out to head onto our next location – Dixie National Forest!

Wizard of Oz at Henderson Pavilion

The Husband and I love how much there is to do in Henderson and Las Vegas aside from the usual touristy things.  In particular, we live within walking distance to Henderson Pavilion which has lots of great shows throughout the year.  Even though we’ve lived here over a year now, we hadn’t made it a point to go to a show until the Wizard of Oz was showing a few weeks ago.

IMG_4704

Before the show, we decided on snacks between the handful of concession stands available to us.  Options included ice cream, shave ice, hot dogs, Girl Scout cookies, and frozen cheesecake.

IMG_4705

IMG_4706

IMG_4707

I originally wanted ice cream but they didn’t have my favorite flavor so I went with Frozen Cheesecake on a candy stick Smile

IMG_4708

IMG_4709

It was yummy!

The Husband went with shave ice.

IMG_4712

On to the show… the covered portion of the theatre is quite large, thankfully!

IMG_4713

I was impressed to see that they provide chairs for those who sit on the lawn.

IMG_4714

We found our seats and looked through our program while we waited for the show to start.

IMG_4715

IMG_4716

While it was scheduled to start at 4pm, I don’t believe we started until 4:15 or 4:20.  There may have been some reason behind stage, but all that the Husband and I could gather was that the attendees were dilly-dallying to get to their seats Smile We’ve never seen adults care so little about hurrying up to get the show started!

Finally, though the show was on and it was lots of fun.  They used a dog from the local SPCA to play Toto and the costumes were lots of fun.

We enjoyed the show greatly and had lots of fun.  The audience was filled with lots of kids, as one would expect, and it was fun to watch them watch the show.  They were generally really good (the parents, on the other hand…).  Since it’s a community pavilion, the ticket prices are very reasonably priced (even for big nationally known performers) so we look forward to making it to another show later this summer or into the fall.
