While my family was in town for Thanksgiving, my mom wanted to treat us all to a show to celebrate their anniversary, Thanksgiving, and the Husband’s birthday. After looking to see what was available, my mom decided on Terry Fator at The Mirage.
For those of you who don’t know who Terry Fator is (I didn’t before going to the show), he is a singing, impersonator, ventriloquist who won America’s Got Talent. Not being a ventriloquist fan myself, I wasn’t too excited about the event but was looking forward to seeing a show on the Strip. The Husband, however, was looking forward to it as he likes the more traditional, cheesy shows with puppets or magic ![]()
My parents had previously seen the show and there are tons of positive reviews for it across the country so I was interested to see what all the hubbub was all about. The show was scheduled for 7:30pm and we made it to the theatre around 7:15. Seating went smoothly and we were entertained by a DJ and some video footage until right before the show started. Then the DJ broke out with a performance himself which was well down and got the crowd energized for the show itself.
As the show started, we realized it wasn’t the normal Terry Fator show but one with a Christmas theme (I believe he called it a Very Terry Christmas, hence the name of this post). He kicked off the show singing without puppets and we were immediately impressed. Then he broke out the puppets and we continued to be amazed.
He actually encouraged the use of cameras (even with flash if one wanted) and welcomed short videos of favorite scenes. I limited myself to just two during the show – the one above of him in the center of the stage and the one below of the video close up (he had screens on both sides). The entire theatre had a good view so the screens weren’t needed for that aspect of the show. They actually just added to it to actually show how good of a ventriloquist he is.
His singing was stellar, his impersonations were good (some were great, some less so), and the show was just an overall good time. Terry Fator has a charitable nature and donates proceeds from his store to military families and he just released an album (or single) of a song he wrote (beautiful song!) of which the proceeds go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Overall, the Husband and I think this was an excellent show and certainly recommend it to anyone who comes to town (or who has an opportunity to see him when he’s on the road). Even if you’re not a ventriloquist fan (like I’m not), the singing and impersonations itself are worth seeing. The prices are reasonable and there are routine sales (in addition to reasonably priced tickets I assume you can get at the half price ticket booths on the strip) and he has a 10 year contract at the Mirage.
I think this is my favorite show thus far and I look forward to checking out other performances while we live here. What has been your favorite show in Las Vegas and what would you recommend we steer clear from?
I was recently in Vegas and saw Ka, Bite, Carrot Top, Penn & Teller, the Blue Man Group and the Comedy Pet Theatre. I wasn’t that bothered about Bite (it wasn’t my idea to go!!!) but the others were all really good. My favourites were Carrot Top & The Blue Man Group, I think, but its really hard to choose!
