As I think we mentioned briefly on the blog a few weeks ago, I’ve recently begun learning how to play golf. The Husband has been playing on and off for years and I’ve always been interested, so we figured what better time than now, especially with the large number of public golf courses in the Las Vegas area. With a handful of lessons under my belt now, the Husband and I have been thinking about adding golf to our list of possible activities when on vacation and our recent trip to the Outer Banks gave us ample opportunity to do so.
Early in the week, we decided to check out a driving range to get in a little practice. The Husband did a little bit of research and we decided to check out The Promenade which is located right next to the Wright Memorial Bridge. They have mini golf, a chipping and putting course, a full driving range, and water sports. Upon arrival, we checked in and paid at the mini golf entrance, and the employee on staff then met us out at the driving range to explain how it worked and to get us clubs.
Once the employee headed back to the mini golf course, the Husband and I got our buckets and our balls. A key thing to remember if you find yourself at The Promenade – go slowly with your tokens! The machines needs to recycle the balls before it will give you a second bucket. Unfortunately, we lost a token, but with the humidity and heat, we decided one large bucket was enough for one day.
Beautiful, lush green grass. And trees
Loving seeing the big trees again!
There’s ample room for lots of golfers at this driving range…
And just a beautiful view of the Sound. Quite a lovely way to spend your day golfing!
As I said before, the humidity was getting to us (this was my first time golfing with humidity!) so after our large bucket of balls, we headed back to the beach house. As we were leaving, I caught a glimpse of these turtles that I wanted to share with you.
Later in the week, we convinced our friends Mark and Greg to play a round of golf with us
There are a good number of courses to choose from, but we ended up going to the Holly Ridge Golf Course just on the other side of the bridge. We found they had a pretty good rate for the four of us and we were able to rent clubs at a reasonable rate.
Lots of clubs to choose from…
The boys hanging out in our carts prior to heading out on the course
Being my first time on a golf course, I was amused by the little things. Clip board steering wheel with our scorecard and a layout of each hole. (I later learned that the “fancier” courses have GPSes and nifty course suggestions… can’t wait to try one of those)
In general, being my first time, I was having a blast.
I didn’t get many pictures but got a handful to share
Some of the boys teeing off…
And apparently not many other pictures… guess I was too busy trying to find my ball!
Overall, the course was fine (you’ll see pretty negative reviews out there on the internet). This doesn’t seem like a course for the long time, serious golfer. Most of the holes were pretty straight from what the guys told me. I even got a Par and a boggie (the other holes I lost count!)
The guys were great and made me really enjoy my first game, so thank you to them!
The biggest downside of this course?? No girls with a drink cart and the course doesn’t take you to a club house until you make it to the end. Luckily we had all brought some water but we were dying of thirst and hunger by the end
Definitely not cool…
Mark, Greg, and The Husband – Thank you for golfing with me on my first outing, being patient, and making it super fun
You guys are the best!
Looking forward to my next golf adventure!
