San Diego – A Whirlwind Trip Through a Great Tourist City

I’ve been to San Diego plenty of times.  It’s a wonderful city.  The Wife’s been to San Diego several times.  She thinks it’s a great city.  It was nice to get to go see it together for the first time.  If you’ve never been to San Diego, you must put it on your list.  I would certainly put it in my top five favorite U.S. cities.

Why is San Diego so great?  Well, to start with, the weather is spectacular.  Even though while we were there it was the coldest July in over 70 years.  Despite only being 5 hours away, it was a universe apart from our hottest July on record in Las Vegas.  So, just like every other visit to San Diego, I thoroughly enjoyed the weather.  We sat on the patio on afternoon, and I realized I hadn’t been in 70 degrees anywhere in the last several months.  The house only gets to about 76, and the office, if I’m lucky, to about 72.  I was on the edge of being COLD!  How odd?  And that’s the weather.  It’s 65-82 year round, every day, and almost always sunny.

Then there’s the different neighborhoods.  From the pretentious La Jolla, to the eclectic Ocean Beach, to the vibrant Gaslamp District, touring the neighborhoods is as interesting, as visiting many of the local sites.

We know a couple that loves San Diego so much, they decided to honeymoon there.

During our time there, we really didn’t have time to hit up all the places we’d normally like to check out.  We went to Ocean Beach for a bite, after driving through La Jolla and Mission Beach, and mostly just cruised the Coast, but had no time to walk around the Gaslamp District, or go sit by the ocean for a drink, let alone check out Sea World, or catch a Padres game, or get a tour of one of the many world-class microbreweries.  We made it out to Shelter Island, which besides Ranchos in Ocean Beach was about the only place we had time to stop and enjoy a walk out in the weather.  Shelter Island, though, offers some great views of the San Diego skyline, with a nice long boardwalk-style walk, and a nice overlook of a beautiful harbor.

It also has this weird, Asian-looking monument at the end.

I think we even managed to make a new friend on the island.

There is so much to do in San Diego, and I really felt like we didn’t have any time to DO any of it.  We had a wonderful time with the Wife’s family (I’m not just saying that), but in terms of being “wanderers,” our time was certainly cut short.

Sounds to me, though, like a great reason to go back for a long weekend!
