Breakfast at the Original Pancake House

When the Husband and I stayed at Green Valley Ranch Resort when we first moved to town,I saw that they have an Original Pancake House. Post-college,I lived in Bethesda,Maryland and there was an Original Pancake House in walking distance from my apartment. My roommate and I went there a handful of times and I remembered enjoying breakfast there. Those positive memories have had me requesting that the Husband go there with me since we moved :-) With his parents in town for 4th of July, and since he and his mom like going to IHOP together,I was finally able to convince him to try the Original Pancake House out!

The restaurant is located near the Green Valley Ranch’s casino,on the way to the hotel part of the building.

When we’ve walked by before,we’ve noticed a line so we were prepared to wait. Arriving there around 9:45,we only had to wait about 10 minutes or so. As the morning went on,the lines looked longer but appeared to be moving smoothly. While waiting in line,we were able to peruse the wall mounted menu a little bit.

The restaurant isn’t owned by the hotel (so if you have a hotel dining credit, you can’t use it here),but the motif matches the rest of the building.

As soon as we sat down and began looking through our menu, our waitress stopped by to grab drink orders.

The Husband hasn’t been feeling very well recently so he went with water, fresh squeezed orange juice (which he decided definitely was freshly squeezed and was quite good),and coffee. When I looked at the menu, chocolate milk called out to me. I can’t recall the last time I had chocolate milk :-) It was good.

After we all put in our orders,we enjoyed our last meal together before the Husband’s parents were going to be heading back east. The wait was a bit longer for our food,as the Husband ordered an omelet. They’re baked,so the menu notes that they take 18-20 minutes. We weren’t in a rush, though,so we enjoyed our time.

The Husband’s omelet was huge. He got his with mushrooms and gouda on the inside and it was topped with a mushroom gravy. (He took about half home and shared a bite or two with me during breakfast.) It also came with a side of pancakes. He was very impressed with the syrup and thought it was pretty close to the real deal. Normally he doesn’t like real maple syrup (he’d rather have Log Cabin),but he thought it was great. He had mixed opinions on the pancakes, though.

Here’s our syrup, butter, and apple sauce plate.

I ordered the Venicia Benedict which was poached eggs, spinach, mushrooms, and bacon on an english muffin topped with hollandaise sauce. I pulled the bacon off and shared it with the Husband. The spinach and mushrooms were perfect and the dish overall was flavorful. The eggs benedict and crepe dishes all came with potato pancakes.

Now,I will caveat my opinion of the potato pancakes. I’m Jewish and have high standards for potato pancakes. So,with that,I thought they were gross. I took two bites and wouldn’t take another. I think what may be the problem is that it’s potentially from a box mix (you often see them in the kosher section of the grocery store). They were gritty and blah. I do not recommend them. The Husband’s parents each had them as well, and while they didn’t love them, they thought they were fine. I ate about 1/4 of the Husband’s pancakes instead :-)

The Husband’s dad had the regular eggs benedict and enjoyed his breakfast and his mom had the spinach crepe (not pictured) which she enjoyed. She said the spinach was quite good.

Overall, the food itself was fine but our waitress Valerie was wonderfully attentive. I’m hoping that I can convince the Husband to give the restaurant another shot. He particularly liked his omelet so I’m still hopeful. Next time,I’m getting pancakes or waffles!
