The Liberty

Ever since I learned about The Liberty’s plans to move in to South End, I’ve been mentioning it to the Husband as a definite place to check out.  Well, their opening came and went and time just kept flying by.  We finally made our way over there a few short weeks ago (late December? pre-Christmas), for a mini company Christmas party for the Husband.  (He’s a subcontractor and telecommutes for his own company so it was a party of one, plus date ;-) )

Their website boasts that they’re the “first gastropub in Charlotte.???  The Husband and I would beg to differ on that as we feel that Sir Edmond Halley’s is a gastropub which we are great fans of. However, their 19 draughts and 60 bottles of beer was a large reason we wanted to check it out!

Of course we both ordered a beer :-) I went with the Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale (front) while the Husband tried the Big Boss “Hell’s Belle.??? I was very impressed (and surprised at my level of impression) with the Smuttynose. Yum!

We were seated near this cool little room.  If I understood it correctly, it looks like the kegs are all refrigerated in that room and are piped to wherever the taps are.  The rest of my pics of the restaurant didn’t turn out very well, but it was a modern place that you could be both casual or slightly more dressed up and still fit in.

We decided to go with an appetizer of soft pretzels.  They were soft, warm, and had the right amount of salt.

Next up – soup and salad! The Husband had a cheddar soup I believe, which he enjoyed.

I was disappointed because their Vidalia Onion soup (on their online menu) looked delish and I was looking forward to ordering it.  Unforutnately, it wasn’t on the menu that night so I went with the Baby Organic Greens, Honey-Balsamic Dressing, Chevre, and Spiced Pecans.  It was a good replacement :-)

For my entree, I ordered the Cedar Plank Salmon with a side of mac n cheese.  Both were fabulous! The salmon was flavorful, perfectly cooked, and worked well as leftovers for lunch the next day.

The Husband ordered Chicken Pot Pie (I think).  I believe the pastry was under the chicken and vegetables.  It was served differently than he expected but he did enjoy it as well (as well as his side of mac n cheese).

My anticipation for The Liberty lived up to its expectations.  Hopefully we’ll go back again soon with friends to try new items on their menu and other flavorful beers.

  • I was looking for a review online so thanks for posting. Good to hear that the Big Boss is getting good reviews as well. Our buddy Andrew up here in University is part owner of the company. The food looks great and the beer list is well priced. How about the Food$?$ -

Glad you found it helpful! If I remember correctly the prices were pretty reasonable, especially for the quality. They have menus on their website that can give you a better idea. Hope you enjoy whenever you get there!
