Quick Dinner at Fazoli’s

The Husband knows my love for Italian food, both quality and cheap Italian food, so when we moved to Henderson and he saw a Fazoli’s, he knew we’d have to go there some time for me to try.  He’d been to them before, but I never had.  Last weekend, we wanted a quick, cheap meal and we weren’t in the mood to cook (contrary to potentially popular belief based on this blog, we actually do cook most of our meals at home!) so we decided to go to Fazoli’s.  Essentially, Fazoli’s is a quick, fast food Italian restaurant with a drive-through option.  We debated doing the drive-through, but I wanted the full sit down experience (drive through will likely happen in the future at least once though).

IMG_4331

Like any fast food place, they had a la carte options as well as value meals :-) But all Italian!

IMG_4332

The restaurant has lots of tables for both small and large parties.

The pergola over the soda fountains added to the ambiance.

The Husband and I each went with pasta dishes (there were pizza options as well) plus side salads.  The pasta was good (when you consider that it’s fast food) but the breadsticks are amazing! They’re unlimited if you dine in (you get one each if you get drive-through). Yum!

A short and sweet post just like the dining experience.  The staff was friendly and I’m looking forward to my next breadstick opportunity at Fazoli’s.

Trevi

Last weekend, friends from back home came to Las Vegas for the first time and we had plans to meet up with them for dinner.  They were staying off of the Strip, but close by, so when deciding where to meet up, we planned on a central location near where their hotel shuttle would be dropping them off.  Caesar’s has such a wide selection of restaurants, varied in type of cuisine and price range, so I looked there for options for dinner.  With the help of OpenTable, we settled on Trevi at the Forum Shops with a reservation at 7:15.

If you’ve never been to the Forum Shops, it’s a mall connected to Caesar’s Palace with an entrance at the casino.  It’s designed as if you’re outdoors in Rome, with some of Italy’s famous fountains located throughout.  Outside of Trevi is the Trevi Fountain (Fountain of the Gods).

IMG_4314

The restaurant facade looks like a restaurant with an outdoor patio, with seating inside and out.

IMG_4315

After some delay due to tables taking a bit longer to vacate than the restaurant expected, we were seated in the “patio” area and began perusing our menus.  The Husband and I had been here before, pre-blog days, so we couldn’t remember what we ordered but we recalled enjoying the food.

We were pretty hungry after the long wait and decided to get an appetizer.  The Husband chose the Bruschetta.  He enjoyed it but I felt it was a bit too thick bread wise to get a good bite… I had to turn to my fork which for me took away some of the flavor.

IMG_4317

For dinner, the Husband ordered Rigatoni Bolognese and a side of the Sauteed Broccoli Florets. We were warned that the broccoli would be pretty garlicky, however, it wasn’t particularly powerful.  We were more disappointed in the level of sauteedness (or lack there of)… they seemed more steamed.  As for the rigatoni, the Husband really enjoyed it.

IMG_4320

I’ve personally fallen in love with eggplant and decided to go with the Stuffed Eggplant which the menu said was stuffed with campenelle pasta, tomato sauce, and italian cheeses.  I had a difficult time imagining what stuffed eggplant would look like, especially stuffed with pasta.  Turns out it was more of an eggplant “bowl” with a lot of pasta, sauce and cheese on top.  I really enjoyed this dish.  I’m finding that when I eat eggplant, due to its mushiness, the rest of the dish needs a variety of textures and this dish hit the mark.  The pasta was al dente, giving it an appropriate amount of chew to balance it all out.  I would definitely order this again and may try to make this dish at home (seems simple enough).

IMG_4321

Consistent with our vague memory of our last visit, we enjoyed our dinner but weren’t overly impressed.  For the area, the menu is reasonably priced and offers a decent variety of options.  Based on its location, though, right at the intersection of the mall and the casino, this restaurant gets quite crowded and even with a reservation, you may have to wait a while to actually get a table.  You’ll enjoy it if you end up here, but there’s no need to go out of your way to experience what Trevi has to offer.

San Gennaro Italian Festival

Two weeks ago, the Husband and I and our friends decided to check out the San Gennaro Italian Festival.  I’m not perfectly sure what we were expecting, but it was not it!  It was a fascinating experience in my opinion…

As soon as we arrived at the Silverton Casino, I knew things were going to be a bit different than I thought… a very bright ferris wheel was there for starters.

IMG_4162

We lucked out with parking and had only a short walk to the ticket booths.

IMG_4164

Once in the event, we saw some booths for local election stuff (which btw local Las Vegas candidates – stop sending us your pamphlets in the mail!).  Around the corner from that was a bus for the Las Vegas Mob Experience.  We took a look on the inside of the bus – a full fledged old school prison bus… Seemed pretty cool.  Perhaps we’ll check it out in person some time?

IMG_4166

There were gold statues of the San Gennaro (or the pope?) covered in money.

IMG_4167

And then there were rows of food… but what surprised me was that only some of it was Italian. Hmm… as I type that, I realize that the festival wasn’t an “italian festival” but a festival for San Gennaro… perhaps he liked quesadillas and chicken platters?

Before finding a stand we wanted food from, we found the alcohol tent, conveniently located next to the entertainment stage.  It was the quintessential Vegas performance… a male singer who sounded like Frank Sinatra (or at least wanted to) and women with giant feathers on their head.

IMG_4176

Then for some reason the patriotic woman was on stage while he sang a patriotic song.  Quite a followup to the Vegas showgirls above.

IMG_4179

It was at this point, while admiring the large crowd, that I proclaimed this was the Jersey Shore version of an Italian festival.  I wish I had gotten more pictures, but here’s a snapshot of some of the guys we saw.  A bit blurry and doesn’t really give you the big picture but trust me! Jersey Shore.  And the Husband and I have never even seen the show :-)

IMG_4175

So many people!

IMG_4178

Finally on to food!

IMG_4169

Look at all there was to choose from! I have no idea if this was a restaurant or just a family selling food but it was good.

IMG_4181

Lasagna! And salad… and garlic bread I scarfed down before I remembered to pull out the camera.

IMG_4183

The Husband got his food from the following stand.  He got the meatballs.

IMG_4184

IMG_4185

My girlfriend got stuffed shells from another stand.

IMG_4186

And then we had fried oreos.

IMG_4190

After one, I wanted something a bit fresher and decided on some Tiki Ice.  Lemon-lime for me :-)

IMG_4191

IMG_4194

Then on to the carnival… glow sticks galore.

IMG_4188

A mechanical bull…

IMG_4195

Monkeys…

IMG_4197

IMG_4196

And of course carnival rides…

IMG_4198

IMG_4203

…. because you have to have carnival rides, monkeys, and mechanical bulls at an italian festival, right?  Fascinating experience….

Prix Fixe at Terra Verde

If you were to examine the cuisines we choose when dining out on this blog, you might actually be surprised to find out that Italian is one of my most favorite cuisines.  I’m not sure why we don’t go to Italian restaurants, but it’s probably a good thing for my pants :-) I often take a long time examining a menu in these restaurants because I want one of everything! A few weeks ago, my girlfriend Michelle and I had a girls night and headed out to a restaurant we’ve both been dying to try – Terra Verde at the Green Valley Ranch resort.  The Husband and I had been there previously with his parents for their Wined Up Friday happy hours, but we hadn’t yet had a chance to dine there.

As I mentioned before, I have a hard time making decisions at Italian restaurants and this was no exception.  Luckily for me, they had a prix fixe menu option and Michelle was interested in doing the same.  Narrowing down our options and giving us multiple courses to try sounded great, and since we like to share, we each chose something different so we’d have six items instead of three to taste!

IMG_3890

As we waited for our first course, we were brought an antipasti plate.  Starting at the left and going clockwise, there were zucchini chips, a flavorful cheese of some sort, roasted red peppers, green and black olives, and artichoke hearts.  We particularly enjoyed the cheese and roasted red peppers.

IMG_3889

Alongside the antipasti plate was a basket of bread with a bit of oil and vinegar.

IMG_3891

Then came our first course!  Michelle ordered the Caprese.  Doesn’t it look delicious? The tomatoes were great and the mozzarella was very fresh.

IMG_3892

I ordered the Caesar Salad, which was much bigger than I expected.  It was one of the better caesar salads I’ve had – fishy and rich. :-)

IMG_3893

In between the first and second course, we took advantage of the $10 wine card that came with our prix fixe menu.  We were each brought cards and after perusing the wine glass menu, we headed over to the bar area to make our choices.

IMG_3895

There were many reds and whites to choose from and you could get one, three, and six ounce pours.  If you ran out of money before your pour was complete, it served you as much as you had.

IMG_3897

I went with a glass of the Jordan Chardonnay (2007) from Napa Valley.  $10 doesn’t go very far in the giant glasses but it was a nice taste with my meal.

IMG_3898 IMG_3900

Demonstrating how the machine works :-)

IMG_3899

When we made it back to the table, it was time for course two.  Michelle ordered the Rigatoni with Spicy Sausage and Peas in a Tomato Cream Sauce.  This dish was amazing! They clearly took the time to let the sauce cook for a long time as you could taste the spicy sausage throughout the dish, even without sausage on your fork.  If you don’t like spicy food, though, this dish isn’t for you.

IMG_3902

I ordered my favorite – lasagna.  I feel like good Italian restaurants will be sure to have a good lasagna on their menu.  This was an excellent lasagna! I estimated that there were 10-12 layers of pasta with a traditional bolognese throughout.  The lasagna was huge and was perfect for two portions – one to eat that night and one for lunch later in the week.  It was even excellent as leftovers.

IMG_3903

Our third and final course was dessert of course.  Michelle ordered the Chocolate Decadence while I ordered the Lemon Angel Cake with Berries.  Unfortunately, we were both disappointed with our desserts.  The chocolate was good but there was a cherry sauce we both disliked.

IMG_3904

The caramelized lemon and the berries on top were good, but the cake was too thick for me and the frosting too sweet.  I was expecting a lighter dish.  Perhaps if I expected the thicker cake and sweetness, I would have enjoyed it more.

IMG_3905

Overall, we very much enjoyed our meal at Terra Verde and we will definitely be back with our husbands.  The food was flavorful and the portions were large.  For only $35 per person, which included the $10 wine card, we were very impressed.  We had originally thought about going to one of the restaurants participating in Las Vegas’s Restaurant Week, but we were very glad we chose to finally check out Terra Verde.
