Return Lunch at Rachel’s Kitchen

Every time I’ve walked past Rachel’s Kitchen at The District or looked at the menu, I’ve wanted to eat there but I haven’t  been hungry.  Recently, Groupon offered a deal there that I snatched up knowing I would get there soon.  When the Husband and I returned from our Christmas in DC, we had no food in the house and we were craving some “healthier” food so I suggested we finally head on over.

Inside, we perused the menu, made our selections, and found a seat while they cooked it all up.

I enjoyed a giant bottle of water (flying + being back in Vegas = super dehydration).

And I played with the camera and the fun design of the restaurant.

For my main course, I ordered the Arugula Pear Salad.  It was baby arugula, pears, shaved fennel, goat cheese and caramelized pecans tossed with a lemon herb vinaigrette.  Delish! And quite large… I had a good portion leftover for lunch later in the week.  This was the healthy dish I’d been craving after a week of Christmas eats and I was glad to have leftovers to enjoy a few days later.

The Husband ordered the Smoked Turkey and Avocado sandwich which was smoked turkey, avocado, swiss cheese, mixed greens, tomatoes, and chipotle mayo (though knowing the Husband, who hates mayo, that probably wasn’t on there).  He LOVED it.  Seriously.  He wouldn’t stop raving… for days.  Even now as I double checked with him on which sandwich this was (nearly two weeks ago), he’s still raving.  I can’t remember the last time he enjoyed a sandwich so much.  He was able to save the second half for later in the week and loved it as much as leftovers as well.

In addition, since we always have to try it, we ordered the Rachel’s Mac & Cheese which the menu says has their “own twist.”  The twist = large slices of sauteed onion.  The Husband wasn’t much of a fan, but I enjoyed it.  It was creamy, cheesy, and al dente.  I probably could have gone for less onion, but I still enjoyed it.

The service at Rachel’s was excellent.  Our dishes were brought to our tables and the staff routinely checked in on us to see how we were doing, to clear our plates, and to bring us take home containers.  The overall menu looks amazing and we can’t wait to go back over and over again to try the other sandwiches, salads, and pastas.  Especially once the weather warms up a bit, I’m sure we’ll be spending many afternoons on walks to The District with lunch or early dinners here.  Can’t wait to be back! Glad it lived up to (and truly exceeded) my expectations :-)
